I really relished SvN's commentary on Penguin’s Great Ideas = great design. I love great typography and am sickened when a client (or two) look at type-only directions as being bereft of design. Similarly, I remember pitching a client on the concept of typographic book covers. And, while they nodded acceptingly, apparently we differed philosophically. My idea of good typography was Penguin's Classics book covers; theirs was poorly selected type, inexplicably compressed and set in all caps. You know what I'm talking about though you probably don't remember details about the book because it's immemorable. And that's why good design is a differentiator in a crowded bookshelf.
