Interesting study from University of Hamburg which reveals that, over time, the use of the browser's back button has decreased by half suggesting a trend toward increased interactivity and form submission. "With the increase in new windows and use of AJAX, the back button has dropped from over 35% to less than 15% of all page transitions."
Of course, it is also likely that this simply reflects the fact that more sites are designed to become meaningfully interactive instead of sites in the past that were typically more exploratory in nature.
