Earlier, I pointed out a smart design solution for the dropped pacifier problem. Coincidentally, I ran into a BusinessWeek feature today on The New Baby-Gear Boom, a slideshow of redesigned products for babies. Except for one, the Philips DECT Baby Monitor, the products they featured were frightfully overdesigned and, frankly, were clearly aimed at parents' wallets instead of their babies' needs. Accenture's Online Playroom, for example, is just a bad interaction model for kids this age from a developmental standpoint who need and respond to haptic, tactile and non-abstract forms and objects. And Cencio's Intellicot just looks like a grim baby prison/museum diorama.
