SXSWi 2006: Does Your Blog Have a Business

Thanks to those of you who attended the panel. And thanks, too, for the copious notes from the panel discussion from Rands in Repose and Auscillate!

I also wanted to provide the link to Clay Shirky's essay on Situated Software. At the panel, I described how we (developer/creative types) have a natural tendency to just want to fix things or figure out a better way to do X so it better suits our specific needs. As the saying goes, "Necessity is the mother of invention."

Situated software essentially describes an approach to developing applications for the needs of a very small group (including yourself) that arise from a very specific, contextual need. When you understand the problem in a very personal way, (a) it's easier to develop a solution that would correct the problem than it would if you were trying to build an application for that mythical target audience (b) you develop better solutions because you're passionate about solving it since it affects you in a very direct, meaningful way. This, I think, describes the common germ among the panelists of what eventually turned into businesses.
