SXSWi 2006: Day Zero

Austin, TX, March 10. I almost had a good night's sleep after having arrived in Austin, March 9 feeling wired and sleep-deprived from having just taken an out-of-state trip the day before. "Almost" because my hotel decided to test the alarm system early in the morning. In my delirium, it took me a while to figure out what that noise was, reflexively swatting at what I thought was the culprit: the alarm clock.

Big Hair Hypothesis: Gorgeous sunny day, high 80s (weather forecasters reported even hitting the low 90s). I think I discovered why people say Texans have big hair. It was wonderfully windy today, I had left the hotel with my usual flat, straight hair. By the time I had reached the convention center for my SXSW badge photo (six minutes later), I discovered I was sporting a fluffy, toussled hairdo.

Food: It took some time to find a cafe that actually served coffee. Most of the places in the area — including cafes — seem to exist primarily to serve alcohol. Food seems somewhat of an afterthought. But what food they do serve is cheap (about half what you'd normally pay for an entree in NY) and quite plentiful (about double the normal portions you'd get in NY).
