Append the exclamation mark to anything and it metamorphoses the banal and lifeless into something that bounces with zeal and passion. Take a look at Yahoo! and tompeters! as examples. And, then there's the interrobang: how the superimposition of the exclamation mark transforms a simple query into an inquisition with purpose and gusto.
I love how such a simple dot-and-stick formula can communicate so much. Sheer graphic minimalism.
A few months ago, I decided to take advantage of the visual muscle of the exclamation point when I designed the cover of a Tom Peters e-book, Tomato, Toma[h]to! The gist of the book is about how Tom contradicts conventional corporate wisdom. Literally smashes it.
And then I recently found this bit of exclamation mark irreverence. Witty!
I just wonder what Lynne Truss would say about this.
